Fit Friday: Some Couples Keep Romance Alive At The Gym

MIAMI (CBS4) - It's Valentine's Day and you're probably planning a celebration that includes a romantic dinner, a box of chocolates, and most likely some flowers. But if you're looking for a way to break out of your Valentine's Day rut, you might want to hit the gym with your loved one.

"It's always important to have someone to push you and who better than your husband?" said Evelyn Lane.

Turns out Lane may be right.

Lane and her husband David work out at Crossfit Coconut Grove. They have been together for 17 years and married for seven of those years.

What is one of the main benefits of tandem workouts? Spending quality time with the person you love.

Josh and Yessenia Cruz, who have been married two years, can agree to that.

"It gives us the ability to hang out with each other," said Josh. "I can coach her she can coach me."

Accountability is a big benefit of sweating with your sweetheart.

"You need a team. Before, when I tried to do it myself, I tend to be a little lazier and I want to fall back in to my old routine," said Yessenia.

There's some scientific truth to it too. A Michigan State University study showed that your partner can be the ultimate exercise motivation by as much as 100-percent.

David and Evelyn's daughter Sarah also goes to Crossfit Kids while mom and dad workout.

"We eat healthy and workout and we mainly made that switch for her," said Lane.

It's a good thing they made that switch.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 22 percent of children and teens are overweight and over 15 percent are obese. Study also shows that people are more likely to be overweight as an adult if their parents are also overweight.

We know exercise makes you healthier physically, but it could also be just as effective emotionally, which is all thanks to the release of endorphins.

"When you work out you're a little bit happier, so you see things different," said Evelyn.

And who doesn't want to look good for their loved one? Plus at the end of your workout, you get some love from your significant other for your hard work.
