FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- A Fort Lauderdale fire marshall heading back to the office spotted a blaze just in time, according to fire rescue.
Acting Fire Marshall Jeff Lucas was on his way back from a meeting when he turned off of 13th street onto 2nd Avenue and spotted a wall of black smoke flowing heavily out of a home in the area.
Lucas called for back up and put on his gear to go into the home to look for people inside.
Firefighters arrived shortly after and extinguished the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby homes.
While no one seemed to be in the home, fire officials believe there may have been squatters living in the backyard.
Fire officials said if Lucas had not spotted the fire it would have surely grown larger threatening residences nearby.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
