Fins On 4 Rookie Of The Week: Billy Turner

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- For Billy Turner, making the grade as a Dolphin offensive lineman is like going to graduate school.

The third round draft pick played tackle in college. The Fins hope to transform him into a guard.

"The most important thing to me is taking the coaching and being able to translate that coaching from the film room and practice out on to the field, maybe in a preseason game or something like that," Turner said. "Just being to show that I can take the coaching and there is a lot of potential within me. "

Turner is a big man who likes to play fast. But in the NFL, he has quickly learned that sometimes the best thing is to mentally slow down.

"You gotta play fast but you gotta know when to play fast and when to play slow," Turner explained. "Not necessarily play slow, but the technique to certain things is almost like you gotta slow your mind down and put it at ease so you're not overthinking things."

Steamy South Florida is a long way from chilly Minnesota where Turner grew up, and frigid North Dakota State where Turner played his college ball.

His NFL dream has been chronicled in an online documentary called Driven.

He wants badly to succeed, but Turner says he's been forewarned about keeping an even keel.

"Everyone that I know in my family and my friends and even the coaching staff through this entire process of getting to this point has told me that there's gonna be ups and gonna be downs," Turner said. "It really just depends on how you're able to ride the waves throughout the entire season and throughout the entire situation.  Everyone says that the rookie season is the longest season. "
