FHP Trooper, Woman Escaped Serious Injury, Truck Came Barreling At Them On I-95
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - Dominic Alexandre was the Florida Highway Patrol Trooper who made the split-second decision to get out of the way of an out-of-control pickup truck on I-95 in Palm Beach County.
The trooper was helping the woman on the highway just south of Hypoluxo Road when a truck came barreling at them.
It happened Thursday afternoon.
"I immediately saw that pickup truck headed towards me and her and that's when to run to the right," says Alexandre.
According to the FHP, a sedan collided with a white pickup truck which then slammed into a silver pickup up truck that crashed into the vehicle the trooper and the woman were standing beside.
The 23-year-old trooper credits his faith for saving him.
"I always know that when your faith is strong, God will always protect you," says Alexandre.
Alexandre says what happened could have been avoided if folks were not rubbernecking and had changed lanes.
"If they pay attention what's in front of them, they wouldn't be slowing down and suddenly braking which probably caused this crash, and move over law even after this situation happened there was still vehicles passing the speed limit or faster where the situation happened," says Alexandre.
According to Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, under the Move Over Law drivers must move over one lane for any stopped law enforcement vehicles if you can't move over safely -you must slow down to twenty miles per hour less than the speed limit. Breaking that law can result in fines, fees, and points on your record.
FHP also says the driver who caused the original hit-and-run crash is in big trouble.
"You have to stop and render aid this is a human being not only is it the right thing for you to do, it's Florida law for you to stop but we have a human being suffering injuries and for you to fail and stop you're facing criminal charges," says
Lieutenant Yanko Reyes.
