MIAMI (AP) — Jose Fernandez struck out seven and allowed one run in four innings for the Miami Marlins in a 3-2 loss to the New York Yankees on Friday night.
Brett Gardner homered off Fernandez, and Alex Rodriguez went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts for New York.
Fernandez allowed two hits and did not walk a batter. He threw 41 of 50 pitches for strikes in his final spring appearance. His first start of the regular season is on April 6 against Detroit.
"I was pitching the seventh game of the World Series today," Fernandez said. "I took everything that I normally do in the regular season I did today so to me this was a very important game."
Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton went 1 for 2 with a run scored.
Nathan Eovaldi allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings for New York, and Lane Adams hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the ninth.
"I thought it was good," Eovaldi said. "I was kind of all over the place the first few innings and I was able to settle it down and get control. I probably had too many walks today, but other than that I was happy with my offspeed."
STARTING TIME
Yankees: In four games this spring training, Eovaldi struck out 10 and walked eight in 14 2-3 innings. Four of his eight walks came on Friday. He threw 88 pitches in his final spring appearance.
"That was good especially with finishing up with spring training," Eovaldi said. "I felt good. I'm happy with where I'm at and I'm ready for the season start."
Marlins: Fernandez is 17-0 with a 1.40 ERA in 26 career regular season starts at Marlins Park and he continued his dominance on Friday.
"Happy to be home," Fernandez said. "Pitching here in front of the fans is always great. I was pretty happy to be here."
TRAINER'S ROOM
Yankees: LHP Andrew Miller (wrist) plans to play through a broken bone in his right wrist. He played catch on Friday and will test it again in some capacity on Saturday according to manager Joe Girardi.
"It's going to take a little time to heal, but I don't think we're really at any risk of doing anything worse to it," Miller said. "It might be something that will be a little bit of a nuisance for a while, but all things considered not too bad."
UP NEXT
Yankees: RHP Luis Severino will start Saturday's game against the Marlins at Marlins Park.
Marlins: RHP Dustin McGowan is slated to start the game making his eighth appearance of the spring.
