FBI Director Stops By Miami Field Office
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - The head of the FBI is in South Florida this week talking about his concerns for securing the country in the future.
On Monday, FBI Director James Comey spoke at the Miramar Cultural Center. While he wasn't specific about the types of resources he's beefing up here, he did say they were primarily "human resources."
Comey took the podium eager to share his top two priorities for all 56 field offices around the country.
"I worry about [them] everyday, and that is the phenomenon we call the Syria traveler- people who go to Syria, bent on engaging in some misguided jihad, and make the worse kind of relationships and get the worse kind of training."
Comey said it's not them going that concerns him the most, but rather one day they will be coming back.
Moner Mohammad Abusalha, a 22-yer old from Vero Beach, is believed to be the first American suicide bomber in Syria.
Comey said there are thousands of these jihadi foreign fighters in Syria and Iraq and their numbers are growing.
Another major area of concern for him are attacks through the internet.
"It's a way bad people come at us, to our children, to our health care information, to our critical infrastructure because we've connected our entire lives to the internet," he said. "That's where the bad guys come."
Comey said the FBI cannot be successful alone and depends on numerous state and county agencies for support.
"The Miami office is the fourth largest in the country and it faces a full plate of white collar crime, medicare fraud, violent crime and cyber crime," said Comey. "I've pushed some additional resources to the Miami office within the last week or so [and] I think they've been put to good use."
