'I'm Not Good' Says Mother Of Girls Found In Margate Canal

MARGATE (CBSMiami) - The parents of two young girls who drowned in a Margate canal Tuesday evening don't want to believe they've lost their little girls.

"I'm not good at all," said the girls' mother Merline Gaspard in Creole. "I'd be better if my two kids were standing next to me."

Louigens Louima said his daughters were playing outside when his wife called him to be picked up from work. Louima said he went inside to change his clothes, but when he got back 4-year old Louidline Louima and 2-year old Louidjiena Louima were gone.

"When I got back, I didn't see my babies. I looked for my babies inside. When I didn't see them, I went outside. After 15 minutes of looking, 20, 30 minutes, I called police," Louima said.

Louima said he secured the gate in the backyard leading to the canal. His 2-year-old's shoe was found outside an unlocked gate next door.

Neighbor Tracey Noonan cannot imagine the father's pain.

"The guilt has just got to be tremendous," Noonan said.

In minutes, there were two children gone, parents devastated and a neighborhood in grief. A cousin of the sisters said he wonders how the mother will carry on.

"It's like a heartbreak, cause the kids meant a lot to the family," said cousin Djemsy Corvil. "I feel what their parents are going through."

All day family, friends and neighbors stopped by to comfort the family.

They said the sisters were inseparable and it is unthinkable they'll never hear their laughter or see them playing together again.

The family is asking for the community to help bury their daughters. They have set up a fund through Wells Fargo where donations can be made.
