Family Suing Uber After Crash Kills Loved One

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Uber and one of its drivers are being sued after a fiery crash claimed the life of a 20-year-old passenger from southwest Miami-Dade.

Pablo Sanchez Jr. was killed December 27th, 2015 while taking an Uber ride home from a Miami nightclub.

Sanchez was a graduate of Killian High School and was attending Miami Dade College. He was pursuing a pharmacy career according to his family.

"He would help everybody," his tearful father said at the family's attorney office in Coral Gables Tuesday afternoon.

Attorney Andrew Yaffa has filed a civil lawsuit against Uber, Uber driver Jean Ralph Adam, the Uber vehicle owner Shamma Chery and Alexander Chica, the driver of the car that hit the Uber vehicle.

At Chery's home in North Miami, a relative said she was unaware of the crash and had no comment on the lawsuit

No one has been charged in the deadly crash while police are still investigating and awaiting toxicology reports.

According to Miami-Dade police, the accident happened at 4:45 a.m.

Police said the Uber driver was transporting Sanchez and three of his friends in a GMC Yukon when he tried to make a left hand turn onto SW 144th Street.

They said the driver of a Toyota Corolla going south on SW 157th Avenue slammed into the Uber vehicle causing it to rollover and land against a wall – with both vehicles exploding in flames.

Sanchez was trapped and died, while everyone else escaped serious injury.

The Sanchez family has many questions about the crash.

They want to know if the Uber driver was tired or distracted.

"Assuming uber will keep transporting our children, the family wants to make sure this never happens again," said Yafffa.

According to Uber, the company has $1 million liability insurance policy on every driver.

In response to the lawsuit, Uber spokesman Bill Gibbons issued a statement saying, "We are deeply saddened by this tragic accident and our thoughts are with all those involved and their families during this very difficult time."
