Exclusive: Weight Discrepancy Involving Cocaine In BSO's Evidence Room
BROWARD (CBSMiami) - The Broward Sheriff's Office has opened an internal affairs investigation into what it describes a "weight discrepency" involving cocaine in the sheriff's department's evidence room.
BSO confirms to CBS4 News that they were contacted in January by the Broward State Attorney's Office regarding two cases in which the amount of cocaine registered by the chemist no longer matched the weight of the cocaine in the sheriff's eveidence room.
The chemist involved in those two cases was previously investigated when crack cocaine went missing from the sheriff's department. The chemist, Kelli McDonald, has been re-assigned while the latest case is being investigated.
BSO does not consider the cocaine "missing" at this point. They said they have contracted with a lab to analyze the possibility the weight of the cocaine may have changed over time. They would not release the amout of the "discrepency" – whether it was grams or ounces – but a BSO spokesman said it was "a small weight discrepency."
