Ex-UFC Fighter Awaiting Trial Is Getting Back In The Cage
FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - An ex-Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran is getting back into the cage while he awaits trial on an aggravated assault charge.
Next month Brazilian light heavyweight Thiago Silva, who fought in the UFC 12-times, will have his first fight in South Florida. Silva has been booked to appear at the Fight Time 20 event which will be held August 29th at the War Memorial Auditorium in Ft. Lauderdale.
"Everyone knows my style, I fight hard, I'm here to fight hard and have fun you know," Silva said Wednesday during a press event to announce the fight.
Silva said he's almost ready to rumble.
"I'm still training, you know, I gotta lose more weight you know. Right now I'm like 230 pounds and I have to lose like 25 pounds. So I'm training, I'm doing my best and pushing hard," said Silva.
On February 7th Silva, 31, was arrested after he reporteldy showed up drunk and armed at an Oakland park gym and threatened to kill his estranged wife, Thaysa, and her boyfriend Pablo Popovitch.
Initial charges of attempted murder were reduced to aggravated assault.
Silva was released from detention on $25,000 bond in March. The judge ordered, as conditions for release on bond, that Silva stay away from drugs and alcohol, wear an ankle monitoring bracelet, attend anger management classes and stick to a 10:00 p.m. curfew.
The UFC released Silva immediately following the incident. It was ruled that the MMA fighter can train and fight in order to make a living in the meantime.
