MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- One person was seriously hurt following an accident that ended up with a car smashing into a school.

Miami Fire Rescue responded to the crash at 95 N.W. 23rd Street, just before 9:30 a.m. on Thursday.

The vehicle struck the side of the Miami Arts Charter School, shattering the glass lobby and sending debris flying.

A school security officer sitting in the area escaped harm "thanks to a support wall," according to school officials.

The driver needed to be extricated from the car. He was taken to Ryder Trauma Center with an injury to his arm.

Two students who witnessed the accident were not hurt but were shaken up. They were evaluated by paramedics and released to school staff.
