MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Dozens are expected to gather this weekend in remembrance  of the late Trayvon Martin whose death sparked a national debate over the controversial Stand Your Ground law.

Martin, 17, was killed in Sanford, in February 2012. George Zimmerman was acquitted in his shooting death in July 2013.

Locals, family and friends of the Florida teen are expected to join in the events planned through the weekend.

On Saturday morning, a Peace Walk is scheduled to start at Miami Carol City Park, 3201 NW 185th Street and end at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex, 3000 N.W. 199th Street in Miami Gardens.

The walk is meant to protest gun violence suffered by African-American youth, according to the event organizers.

The walk will be followed by a peace talk led by Martin's mother Sybrina Fulton and include local political leaders like Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert.

On Sunday, a remembrance dinner is set to honor various local leaders like  U.S. Congresswoman Fredricka Wilson.

The organization The Dream Defenders is also set to be honored at the dinner. They organized a 40 mile, 3-day march in response to Martin's death.

"There's nothing that we can do to bring Trayvon Martin back, but if there's something that we can do to help other families from going through this, then we're here", said Fulton.
