MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Miami Dolphins made an unexpected move on Monday, placing the transition tag on tight end Charles Clay.
The move gives Miami the option to match any offers made to Clay by other teams. The Dolphins would have seven days to match any offer sheet given to Clay.
If they choose not to match an offer, Miami would receive no compensation for Clay.
Clay, a four-year veteran with the Dolphins, is guaranteed to make at least $7.075 million in 2015.
The 26-year-old Clay battled a knee injury throughout the 2014 season that he suffered during training camp.
Clay still played in 14 games, racking up 58 receptions, 605 yards and three touchdowns. It was a far cry from his breakout 2013 season in which he caught 69 passes for 759 yards and seven touchdowns but there is still a big upside with Clay.
He has built a strong rapport with quarterback Ryan Tannehill and the duo's continued development could be a major key in Miami breaking their 6-year playoff drought.
