Dolphins LB Dannell Ellerbe Out For Remainder Of Season
DAVIE (CBSMiami) – The Miami Dolphins have lost one of their starting linebackers for the season.
Miami head coach Joe Philbin announced that will place Dannell Ellerbe on season-ending injured reserve on Monday.
Ellerbe, 28, injured his hip during the Dolphins 33-20 win over the New England Patriots on Sunday.
Miami signed Ellerbe during the 2013 offseason in what was viewed as a major move towards improving their defense. He played 15 games for the Dolphins last season, finishing with 101 tackles and two interceptions.
"Dannell's a heck of a player and we were excited about the prospects of him moving back to the [outside linebacker] position and playing as effectively as he could," said Dolphins defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle. "But that's part of the game and we move on like every team in the league does when you have injuries, you have to have people step up and fill in."
The Dolphins are expected to sign four-year veteran linebacker Kelvin Sheppard, who previously played for the Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts, to take Ellerbe's roster spot.
