DAVIE (CBSMiami) – The Miami Dolphins are back on the practice field on Wednesday as the team prepares for its home opener against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday at Sun Life Stadium.
The Dolphins have been one of the worst rushing teams in the NFL so far this season, something they will look to improve upon against the Bills stout defense.
Starting running back Lamar Miller has struggled to get going behind Miami's offensive line. His status for Sunday remains in question due to an ankle injury he suffered earlier this season, though he declared himself good to go last Sunday.
Whether or not the Dolphins coaching staff agrees with Miller is yet to be seen but the team made a roster move on Wednesday that may imply there isn't much faith in Miller's health.
The Dolphins announced that they have promoted running back Jonas Gray to the 53-man roster from the team's practice squad for the second time this season.
Miami originally signed Gray to the practice squad on September 9th and promoted him to the 53-man roster on the 11th, only to waive him on the 14th and sign him back to the practice squad on the 16th.
Both backs will be on the practice field on Wednesday and for the rest of the week, barring any additional injuries. How those practices go will likely dictate how the Dolphins coaching staff utilize the ball carriers.
Through two games so far this season, Miami ranks 29th in the league (out of 32 teams) with an average of 58.0 rushing yards per game and is tied for 26th with an average of 3.4 yards per carry.
