OAKLAND PARK (CBSMiami) -- The search is on for a car involved in a hit and run crash in Oakland Park. All this as the victim clings to life.

Broward Sheriff's deputies said the crash landed 22-year old Joseph Deverson in the hospital.

Deverson was on his Go-Ped around 10:45 p.m. Monday when a car slammed into him near Powerline Road just north of Oakland Park Boulevard.

A day later, Deverson's friends were comforting his distraught and destroyed father during a candlelight vigil held where the crash happened.

His friends were stunned to hear the news.

"It didn't just really hit me until, you know, everybody's here and we're just trying to be here for him.  It's real sad for us not to know what's going to happen to him," said Deverson's friend Vinnie Souza.

Deverson had been out fishing with his buddy Chance Simmons and headed home on his Go-Ped.

"He went to go home because he had to go to work the next day and next thing you know I'm getting a call that he's at the ICU," said Simmons. "I asked him for a ride home and he literally said, 'I like riding at night. It's cool.'"

But he never made it home.

Investigators believe it may be possible the driver did not see Deverson on the motorized scooter.

Deputies said, based on vehicle parts left at the scene,  investigators believe the car they are looking for is a white, 2013 or newer BMW 6 series. There may be some damage to the front, passenger side of the vehicle including the bumper, hood, quarter panel and possibly the windshield.

A motorized scooter is not considered a legal vehicle to operate on the road. Investigators said if the driver had remained on scene, he or she may not have faced any charges in the crash.

His friends want the person behind the wheel to come forward and face justice but more than anything, they want their friend to pull through.

"Hoping for the best right now.  Hope he'll come through and we're all just trying to be strong for him here," said Souza.

Deputies are asking anyone who has information in the case to step forward or call Broward Crime Stoppers at (954) 493- TIPS.
