TAMARAC (CBSMiami) -- A violent argument came to a peaceful end in Tamarac after Broward Sheriff's deputies were able to stop a woman with a knife from harming an infant.

Lorraine Drayton, 33, was arrested Thursday night following the incident at a home in the 8000 block of N.W. 96th Terrace.

Drayton and her ex-boyfriend, 35-year-old Gary Hunter, were arguing when the dispute intensified. Police said Drayton began biting Hunter "when he tried to stop her from getting to two children who were in the home."

Drayton then grabbed a knife from the kitchen and the 4-month-old baby and barricaded herself inside a bathroom, threatening to kill the child.

"Broward Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the scene and tried to coax Drayton from the bathroom," officials said. "When negotiations failed and concerns for the infant's safety grew, deputies forced the bathroom door open and saw Drayton sitting on the floor holding the little boy and pointing the knife toward the deputies, while threatening to harm the infant if deputies approached."

One deputy fired a shot from his less-lethal shotgun after Drayton stood up and turned the knife toward the infant.

She was struck in the leg but it didn't stop her, according to the police report, forcing another deputy to deploy a taser.

Drayton was taken into custody without further incident. She suffered a minor injury from the bean-bag round.

The baby wasn't harmed.

Drayton was medically cleared and booked on charges of child abuse and domestic violence. She also had an active warrant for obstruction without violence.
