Man Shot To Death Outside Northwest Miami-Dade Food Market

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Police are conducting a death investigation after a man was shot outside a 24-hour grocery store in northwest Miami-Dade.

The seconds just before, during, and after the crime were captured on surveillance tape from the store. The owner of that business told CBS4's Peter D'Oench multiple cameras showed what happened around 5:10 in the morning.

On that surveillance tape, you see the victim initially with his back turned outside the store as he is handing another man some sort of item. Suddenly, you see two men on the right running across the street. The gunman is wearing a white shirt and is holding up part of it to cover his face. The shots are fired and then both men are seen running southbound on N.W. 27th Avenue.

The owner of the store said Miami-Dade Police have also seen the tape and have taken a copy of it with them. A daytime store manager said she did not recognize the victim and said she did not think he had been inside the store before the shooting happened.

Police said they expected a flyer about the shooting to be released.

Police say the man was shot multiple times in front of the LT Food Market at NW 27th Avenue and 43rd Terrace.  They have not released his name.

Joel Palmer, who knew the man, said he believed he was in his 40s and homeless. He said the man was always nice to other people and something must have gone very wrong.

"I figured he got himself into some trouble if he got shot. It's kinda hard to be on the streets but out here people like live on the streets, you know, they come here all the time," said Palmer.

Palmer said the man had told him that he had been shot before.

"He told me he had been shot 17 times (in a previous incident), that's more than a cat," he said.

"I guess in this case they meant to do it," he said. "I would sure like to see them catch whoever did this. He was a nice gentleman who often came around here."

Palmer, who works at the nearby historic Hampton House, said the victim "showed me around the Hampton House before so he must have been employed here."

A neighbor, Manuel Gonzalez said, "Last night I was sleeping and I heard several shots being fired. It definitely sounded like gunfire. I heard four shots. I just kept on sleeping because you constantly heard gunfire around here."

Police are reviewing the store's surveillance in an effort to get a lead on the gunman.

So far, they have not released details about the shooter and the man who he was with or a motive.

Anyone who can help solve this case should call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS (8477).

There is a reward of up to $3,000.
