FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - An armed, masked man who broke into a home in unincorporated Broward with the intention of robbing the man inside was shot and killed during a confrontation with him.
Witnesses told investigators they saw the man, later identified as 51-year old Gary Peterson, skulking around a home at 530 NW 39th Terrace around 3:30 a.m. and try force his way inside.
Curtis Traylor, 33, who lives in the home, confronted Peterson and the two men argued, according to Broward sheriff's investigators.
The argument turned physical and Peterson was able to get inside. Traylor went and got his gun and shot and killed Peterson.
There are no charges pending at this time for Traylor.
Beverly Long, who went to school with Peterson, said he grew up in the neighborhood and had been in and out of prison.
"He tried to break in, that's all he did all his life," said Long.
As to why he would try to rob Traylor, she replied "He was on drugs."
Long added that while she and her neighbors were upset about the killing they would probably would have done the same.
The sheriff's office said Peterson had an extensive criminal history of charges including robbery with a firearm, PVP possession, cocaine possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession with intent to sell, trespassing, battery, resisting arrest with violence, resisting arrest without violence and parole violation.
He was recently released from prison for a June 2015 arrest.
