MIAMI GARDENS (CBSMiami) – The coworker of a clerk gunned down outside a Miami Gardens food market said he heard the gunshots just before his shift change.

Hussian Majiad said was waiting for his co-worker Zaid Karbar to relieve him at the Strawberry Grocery Store Friday night.

"He came to work at 7:20. When he got out of the car, he park it outside of the store and he got out of the car," said Majiad.

But the 53-year-old father of eight would not make it inside the store, as someone fired bullets.

"I just heard a shot behind the wall. I heard the bullets hit the wall, about like three, four times," said Majiad. "I see him down on the floor. He died pretty quick."

Miami Gardens Police responded to the scene off Northwest 191st Street and 37th Avenue.

Customers said the Karbar was well known and well liked in the neighborhood.

"He's a good guy.  If I need anything and I even don't have the money, he'll give it to you. This is a good guy," said a customer.

Near the bullet holes on the side of the building is growing memorial with teddy bears and flowers that customers have left behind in memory of a Karbar.

"He's a good person.  He's a nice person, very nice person.  He has no problem with nobody," said customer Jose Mgiid.

Investigators said they searched the area for potential surveillance cameras.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-6160.
