Coronavirus Update: Masks Must Be Worn In Miami Beach At Supermarkets, Pharmacies & Restaurants
MIAMI (CBSMiami) - On Friday afternoon, Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber announced an emergency measure to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
The measure calls for customers and employees to wear masks at supermarkets, pharmacies, and restaurants.
Guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention encourage people to use rudimentary coverings like T-shirts, bandannas and non-medical masks.
Protective masks are hard to find at stores, that is why the CDC is suggesting T-shirts and bandanas.
President Donald Trump announced the new guidelines during an afternoon press conference.
Trump said it's a voluntary measure. "I'm not choosing to do it," he said.
Dr. Parham Eftekhari, who's board-certified in internal medicine, tells us the homemade masks should be cleaned regularly.
"Those who choose to wear masks are really being proactive if they do it in the right way by limiting droplet transition, especially airborne.
"If you can see through it, you can not use it. you want a thick 100 percent cotton."
"You want to avoid linen, or softer fibers, or polyester and things that are stretchy."
While the new normal will be citizens walking around with covered faces, it can't be stressed enough. The masks are not a cure-all and social distancing must continue to be strictly enforced.
