CORAL GABLES (CBSMiami/AP) — The Miami Hurricanes are off to a great start in the NCAA Tournament Regionals.
Zack Collins drove in three runs to lead top-seeded Miami to an 8-3 win against third-seeded Columbia in the NCAA Coral Gables Regional Saturday night.
The Hurricanes (46-14), the No. 5 national seed, had four runs in the second inning against Columbia starter Kevin Roy, who allowed four hits and a walk to the first five batters he faced in the frame. Willie Abreu had a two-run double down the left-field line to start the scoring.
In the fourth, Collins hit a two-run single off fellow lefty Mike Weisman, who replaced Roy after the right-hander surrendered his third walk of the inning — sixth overall — to load the bases with two outs. Collins added an RBI single in the eighth.
For the Lions (32-16), the designated home team Saturday at Miami's ballpark, Gus Craig blasted a solo home run in the second and David Vandercook hit a two-run shot in the fourth. Miami starter Thomas Woodrey allowed four other hits in 5 2-3 innings, and struck out five.
