DORAL (CBSMiami) – What is old is new again in the City of Doral as residents elect the city's founding mayor Juan Carlos "JC" Bermudez back to the position he held from 2003 to 2012.

Bermudez beat incumbent Luigi Boria in Tuesday's runoff election by a two-to-one margin. Bermudez received 67-percent of the vote while Boria received 33-percent.

The two candidates faced a runoff because no candidate secured the majority 50-percent plus one vote needed to win outright on Nov 8.

Bermudez, born in Cuba, has served on numerous community boards including the Miami-Dade County League of Cities, the Florida League of Mayors, the Miami-Dade County Commission on Ethics and Public Trust, and the Doral Community Coalition. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame Law School and has lived in Doral for almost 18 years.

Bermudez was Doral's first mayor, elected when the city was incorporated in 2003, becoming the 33rd city in Miami-Dade County.

Doral was a major warehouse district with easy access to the Miami airport and became a hub for Venezuelan immigrants fleeing the Chavez regime. Its population back then was 22,000. Today it has grown to 54,000.

Voters also elected Claudia Mariaca, a long-time political activist to the city council. She defeated political newcomer Adriana Moyano.

According to the Miami-Dade Elections Department, 7,044 people voted — a 31 percent turnout.
