Child, adult hurt, taken to hospital in Aventura car accident

AVENTURA - A child in a stroller and the woman who she was with were rushed to two different hospitals Tuesday after being struck by a vehicle.

"This is horrendous. This is horrendous. This shouldn't happen," said neighbor Lisa Weinberg.

Chopper 4 captured some sobering images showing an empty stroller at the scene at 2750 N.W. 183rd St. in front of the Commodore building and just east of Biscayne Boulevard.

A pickup truck was also seen at the intersection as police officers searched for evidence.

Aventura Police said, "everyone involved" in the accident including the driver of at least one vehicle remained on the scene.

Police spokeswoman Teresa Williams said she did not have the identities or the ages of the woman and the child and could not say which hospitals they were taken to.

"We are still investigating and because of the process, we can't provide any details as to how this happened."

Williams said it was too early to say if there would be any citations or charges in this case.

CBS News Miami also spoke with Kathy Webman who drove by the scene moments after the accident happened.

"I knew this was serious," she said.

"One guy was smacking her face to wake her up and another guy was frantically telling all the cars to go, go and I said, 'Excuse me. Is she okay and he didn't answer me? My reaction was 'Oh my God I saw a girl laying there. And she was such a young girl."

"This area is a nightmare," she said.

"There should be lights. People go fast and they don't stop. I have had times beeping my horn. This is the worst intersection in the whole wide world."

Webman has lived in the area for 18 years.

Other neighbors agreed, saying the area had problems with traffic and speeders.

Carmen Alarcom said she has lived in the area for 23 years and said she has to be more careful than ever while going for walks with her beloved, 2-year-old Sheba Inu named Ozzy.

"This is more dangerous than ever," she said.

"It's all because of the cell phones. I am sorry to say that everyone is on their cell phones with their hands. Nobody cares. They see and they talk and they text. So I am really careful. I stop and I go and I watch."

Another neighbor named Isabella said, "It's scary a little bit. I have an 11-month-old child I walk in a stroller."

Neighbor Margarita Curiel said, "When you want to cross the street, you have to be careful about cars because they don't stop."

Her husband added, "People don't like to stop or come to a full stop. They are running like that."

CBS News Miami has been trying to find out if Aventura city officials have received any complaints from residents about traffic and speeding in the area.
