CDC Investigate Outbreak On Cruise Which Docked In S.Fla.
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- Health officials from the Centers For Disease Control are investigating an outbreak on a cruise ship which docked on Saturday in Fort Lauderdale.
According to the CDC, 114 people on board the MS Veendam, a Holland America Line, reported being ill with some type of gastrointestinal illness during the ship's voyage.
Ten of the 575 crew members also reported being sick.
Symptoms reported include diarrhea and vomiting.
The officials boarded the ship on Saturday to conduct an environmental health assessment and evaluate the outbreak as well as response activities.
The Panama Canal cruise, with 1,273 passengers, was traveling since February 8th.
According to Holland America Cruise line, "prior to guests boarding yesterday for the next cruise, the ship underwent a thorough sanitation."
The ship sailed on Saturday heading for San Diego for its next 15-day Panama Canal cruise.
A cause for the illnesses has not been determined.
Last week, a cruise ship worker for the line was arrested upon returning to Port Everglades after he was accused of raping a passenger and then trying to throw her overboard.
