MIAMI (CBSMiami) – When the Miami Hurricanes fired head coach Al Golden midway through the 2015 football season, many fans were hoping that a former Canes coach would be hired to run the team again.

While several names with Miami connections were floated around, Butch Davis was considered my many the main candidate for the job.

Davis, who was responsible for the rejuvenation of the Hurricanes football program during the 90s, also coached in the NFL and for the University of North Carolina.

When Miami began the interview process, Davis was one of the first people to be brought in and it seemed as though a reunion was becoming a likely outcome.

That all changed when the University of Georgia fired head coach Mark Richt.

Richt, a former Hurricanes quarterback who became a very successful coach at the collegiate level, was quickly offered the Canes head coaching job and accepted it shortly thereafter.

It happened so quickly that Miami never called Davis to tell him that he wouldn't be offered the job.

"Well I had stated about a month before that I'd love the opportunity and certainly I put my name in the ring," Davis said during an appearance on CBS Sports Radio with Gio and Jones. "I got a chance to interview for the job and they chose to go in a different direction. That's the life you live sometimes when you're a coach. I'd have loved the opportunity, but obviously it didn't work out."

Gregg Giannotti (Gio) followed that up by asking Davis if Miami gave him any reasons why he didn't receive an offer for the job.

"No, as a matter of fact, they never called and even told me I didn't get the job," Davis said. "I actually heard it on the radio."
