BSO: Twin Sisters Drown In Apartment Pool

DEERFIELD BEACH (CBSMiami) - The Broward Sheriff's Office says 2 1/2 year-old twin sisters escaped unnoticed from the Tivoli Park apartment they share with their mother in Deerfield Beach late Tuesday afternoon, got into a nearby pool and drowned.

BSO says the children were found by a couple visiting the area from North Carolina, who were heading to the jacuzzi.

"The gentleman noticed a body of a young girl in the pool," said BSO Spokesperson Keyla Concepcion. "He jumped in the pool right away, pulled her out and began CPR."

BSO says a woman with the man spotted the second child, pulled her from the water and also began CPR. Both children were rushed to Broward Health Medical Center but neither child survived, according to BSO.

"The children live with their mother in an apartment that surrounds that pool, around the pool area," Concepcion said. "Right now we're looking into how the children ended up in the pool."

Investigators say the lock on the pool was broken and detectives are still trying to figure out how long the children were in the pool before they were found. While those questions are sorted out, family members and friends poured out into an open are at the apartment complex, overcome with sadness.

People who live at the apartment complex and first responders hoped this tragedy might provide a lesson for other parents...

"It only takes a second and it happens every day in South Florida," said resident Louis Georogianas. "That's what we have to be really aware of -- teaching the children to swim."

Mike Jachles, spokesperson with Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, said with summer nearing it is critical for children to knowing swimming safety.

"Children must be supervised," Jachles said. "Children should know how to swim. Adults and children that are old enough should know CPR and take CPR classes."
