NORTH LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) - A man who said he shot an intruder lied to detectives to cover up for his girlfriend's son, according to Broward Sheriff's deputies.

All this just one day after 60-year old Louis Campbell told deputies he had shot Jeff Jean-Baptiste, 22, after he thought he was going to attempt to burglarize their North Lauderdale home. Jean-Baptiste later died.

Deputies said Saturday, Campbell's partner, Rosa Lee, her 34-year-old son, Rahman Lee, and her 14-year-old granddaughter were home at the time of the incident.

By the time deputies arrived, Rahman Lee had left the home.

During the investigation, deputies said they found inconsistencies in the story which caused a different story to unravel.

Deputies said it was actually Rahman Lee who shot the intruder.

He was in the back porch smoking marijuana when he heard someone open to door of the shed, according to detectives. It was dark and he noticed a shadow moving. Rahman, claiming he was startled and scared, fired shots that hit Jean-Baptiste.

As for why Campbell lied to deputies, they said Rahman had been convicted for trafficking in cocaine and was not supposed to be in possession of a firearm.

Deputies said Rahman was afraid the shooting would land him back in prison. That's when they came up with the story Campbell later told investigators.

Detectives said they still believe Jean-Baptiste was trying to burglarize the home.

Charges are pending depending on the outcome of the investigation.

Once they finalize the investigation, it will be presented to the State Attorney's Office for their review and recommendation.
