WESTON (CBSMiami) – The Broward Sheriff's Office said they arrested the thief who kidnapped, carjacked and shot a college-aged man learning how to drive stick shift in Weston Monday afternoon.
Deputies from the BSO Weston district were dispatched to US 27 and MM 39 shortly before 4:30 p.m. because of a possible kidnapping and carjacking incident.
Authorities said a victim at the scene told them she was teaching her college-aged son how to drive a stick shift in the parking lot of Gator Run Elementary School when they were approached by a man who forced them at gunpoint to drive to a rest area.
While at the rest area, the woman said the gunman ordered them out of their Jeep Wrangler and started inquiring about her finances.
At some point, the woman's son reportedly got into a struggle with the carjacker, and was shot in the leg by the robber.
A witness who arrived at the rest area and saw the commotion came to the aid of the mother and son and was able to help detain the robber until deputies arrived.
The son suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue took him to Cleveland Clinic.
The carjacker is expected to face attempted murder, armed carjacking and armed kidnapping charges. He should appear in bond court Tuesday.
