COOPER CITY (CBSMiami) – The Broward Sheriff's Office is hosting a free gun safety course for children Tuesday night.

Accidental shootings are a tragedy which happen all across the country--three of which happened in the last week in South Florida, one where a 14-year-old lost his life.

In an effort to prevent these tragedies, BSO is hosting the course Tuesday from  7 to 9 PM at 10580 Stirling Road for children ages 11 to 14.

The free course will touch on: safety rules for secure handgun storage, responsibilities of owners to properly secure and store the firearms, dangers of toy guns vs. real guns, and a review of scenarios dealing with finding firearms in homes and presenting them in public.

Parents are encouraged to attend with children.

BSO said there will be refreshments and free gun locks provided.
