WESTON (CBSMiami) --  A Broward Sheriff's Office deputy's quick actions saved the life of a South Florida student Friday morning.

Deputies said a student ran up to Deputy Charles Rawls around 10:25 a.m. saying his friend was choking in the cafeteria of Cypress Bay High School.

That's when Rawls ran to the rescue.

"As I ran up, he was gripping his throat with both hands," Rawls said. "He was struggling to breathe."

Rawls started the Heimlich Maneuver on the 10th grade student. After about six compression, they were able to get the food out and the student was able to breath again.

Broward Sheriff's Fire Rescue took the teen to the Cleveland Clinic undergo evaluations. He has since been discharged.

"I was very grateful that I was at the right place at the right time," Rawls said. "I was just doing my job."

Rawls has been with the Broward Sheriff's Office since 2000 and a school resource deputy at the school for about six years.
