Broward Middle, High Schools Set To Launch Handheld Metal Detector Testing

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Vickie Cartwright announced the district is beginning a student wanding program with handheld metal detectors.

In January, the Broward County School Board voted to approve handheld metal detectors at county schools.

Thursday, Dr. Carwright held a news conference to provide a few more specifics about the program.

A computer program will randomly select two schools a day, five days a week for random testing.  When wanding is performed it will be on entire classrooms.

The goal is to increase safety on school campuses. So far this school year, 151 weapons have been discovered in Broward Schools.

This policy will be rolled out in the district's 35 middle schools and 32 high schools.
