BROWARD (CBSMiami) – Broward groceries and stores with hurricane essentials saw a massive uptick in foot traffic Friday as residents prepare for possible hit from Tropical Storm Erika.

Many of the shoppers CBS4's Peter D'Oench spoke with are concerned about the possibility of flooding and losing power.

Many have passed through the Walmart store at Griffin and Flamingo Roads, which is open 24 hours.

With a nervous chuckle, Giselle Blanco said she is "scared" with the storm looming.

She was at the Walmart to buy canned food and a lot of water.

Christie Parkhurst had two things on her mind when buying supplies.

"Bottled water, cat supplies, cat food," she said.

And Faride Moises was grabbing the essentials for her family.

"Milk, Cereal juice, water," she said. "I have three kid – I won't take any chances. I can't take any chances."

In Cooper City, people like Jason Kaufman were filling up their vehicles and gas containers for generators.

"I'm just doing it out of precautionary reasons to have some gas for my generator if the power goes out like it did during Wilma. It was out for two weeks," said Kaufman.

Sandbags were in high demand for flood prone residents in Hollywood. The line stretched a mile long to the Public Works Department to get 10 free bags.

"Yeah we've had water in the garage a few times," said a person waiting in line.

As of Friday evening, the Broward E.O.C. has activated to the lowest level in advance of the storm.

"At this point the major hazard to our residents and public should be aware of is the potential for heavy rainfall and flooding," said a Broward E.O.C. official.
