BROWARD (CBSMiami) – Broward County approved an ordinance Tuesday to reduce the penalty for pot possession to a civil citation.
Commissioners reached a unanimous decision to fine people $100 for possessing 20 grams or less of marijuana. A second offense would be $250 and a third offense would be $500. After three fines, possession would be considered a crime.
Current Florida law makes misdemeanor marijuana possession punishable by up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
Miami-Dade and Palm Beach both approved a similar ordinance earlier this year.
