FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) --  The man, police say, led them through a high-speed chase on Wednesday appeared before a judge the following day.

Lenord Henley, 32, cracked a smile again in court after smirking last night while he was being booked in jail.

Now he's not only accused of running from police but of attempted murder for a completely different case.

"Mr. Henley knew, I believe there's evidence he knew that he was wanted or being investigated for this and that's why he fled from police yesterday, putting people's health and safety in jeopardy and harm just to try to get away from law enforcement," said a prosecutor in court on Thursday.

On the same day, authorities said what prompted  the chase in Broward County the day before.

Fort Lauderdale Police said just after 3 p.m. they were alerted by a License Plate Reader system (LPR) of a stolen 2005 White Toyota Scion in the area.

Officers said the car was confirmed stolen and was also identified as being used in a homicide in Fort Pierce.

That's when officers were dispatched to try to make contact with the driver of the car near 1230 NW 8th Street in Fort Lauderdale. Officers have identified the driver as 32-year old Lenord Henley.

Police said Henley refused to stop, prompting the high speed chase on Wednesday afternoon.

During the chase, the driver slid across four lanes of traffic to the right shoulder, not worried about staying on the road. He then went onto the grass to get away from cars.

At one point in the chase, the driver stopped and a woman bailed out of the car. She was later detained by officers and released.

The chase concluded when the driver pulled over at a Pompano Beach parking lot where he was taken into custody.

Police were actually after the car since investigators in Fort Piece want to know if there's evidence in there from a murder last month. Why Henley was in the car is still a mystery.

But now, Henley is facing charges of grand theft of a motor vehicle, driving while license suspended, aggravated fleeing and eluding and reckless driving.

Henley was also a wanted man. Under a Broward Sheriff's Office Warrant, he was wanted for attempted 1st degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.  He's known as "Bojangles," according to the warrant. Investigators said he shot a man in May.

His bond is set at more than $600,000 dollars.  Based on his long criminal history and that fact that he was just released from prison six months ago, prosecutors are afraid Henley will take off.
