South Florida 6-year-old boy loses hand after fireworks explosion

Boy, 6, loses hand to fireworks explosion

MIAMI - The Broward Sheriff's Office is investigating how a 6-year-old boy lost his hand after a fireworks explosion in Deerfield Beach Tuesday morning.

Officials said they responded to a home located at 600 NW 1st Terrace just after 10 a.m. and found a boy with a "complete hand amputation."

CBS News Miami has learned the incident happened in the backyard of the home.

The boy's father tells CBS News Miami that Kyrie Herman lost his left hand during the explosion.

The child was flown to Broward Health in Fort Lauderdale via rescue chopper.

The dad says his son has undergone two surgeries, but doctors were not able to save the hand.

Authorities did not say how or why the boy got a hold of the fireworks, as they continue to investigate.

It is not clear if anyone will be facing charges or if anyone had been arrested.

Kyrie remains at Broward Health in stable condition.
