Bowie-Inspired Art Basel Exhibit Invites Public To Go Galactic

MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) -- Art Basel's Public sector arm, meant to make art for everyone, is offering up a dose of pop and art.
'Ground Control,' an exhibition inspired by the late singer David Bowie, has over 20 large-scale sculptures and installations at Collins Park.
They're partnered with Lady Bunny's Intergalactic Disco - a spaceship-disco tribute to the late singer equipped with silver dancers.
For the curator of the exhibition, Nicholas Baume, the theme of Bowie is personal. For the public it draws in various generations.
"Ground Control was a perfect, I thought, because I did love David Bowie and his music and felt like he was not just an amazing and influential musician but a cultural figure whose influence and importance resonates throughout the culture and certainly through the visual arts," said Baume.
The contemporary works invite the viewers to experience a different relationship with their surroundings on various levels.
"Ground Control to Major Tom, it's all about man and technology and how that is this Utopian thing that can send us into outer space but at the same time, we can lose contact with ground control. We can be disassociated from our terrestrial foundations," said Baume.
They're surroundings that include the 'Miami Mountain,' boulders in bright colors that tower over the park and a large fan in a tank of peanut oil, partnered with pieces from more established artists like Sol LeWitt's open cubes.
"It's about heightening your perceptions, seeing things in a different perspective, engaging on different levels sensually, intellectually, physically, spiritually," said Baume.
The Public sector of Art Basel will be up until Sunday at 6 p.m. It's free and open to the public.
