Boat crash near Blackpoint Marina leaves, one dead, two hurt
MIAMI -- One person died and two others were hurt as the result of a boating accident Tuesday afternoon near Blackpoint Marina, authorities said.
Air and boat rescue crews were called around 2:45 p.m. to the area after receiving reports of a boating incident, Miami Dade Fire Rescue said.
According to Florida Fish and Wildlife, a 39' Contender was traveling at a high rate of speed in Biscayne Bay when the boat's operator lost control, ejecting the three people on board.
The victims were flown to Jackson South Medical Center for treatment following the accident.
The operator of the vessel, 42-year-old Michael Garcia of Miami, died as a result of his injuries.
Video from the scene showed a damaged boat floating in the water with scattered debris.
Kenneth Rodriguez, who was on his boat when the incident occurred, told CBS News Miami that he tried to help the victims.
He said one of the people appeared to be unresponsive.
"The two other people that were on the boat that were injured from the accident were just in severe pain and reaching out to family," he said.
