MIAMI (CBSMiami) — Boat owners planning to hit the water over the long Memorial Day holiday weekend are being urged to call ahead to their marina before heading out.

The Memorial Day weekend is one of the most popular times for boating. High demand translates into long lines, long waits and lack of parking at marinas and boat ramps.

To help customers prepare for, and possibly, avoid delays the Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department urges boaters to contact the marina they use, or plan to use, for important information like:

•Best times to launch in order to avoid delays

•Updates on traffic and parking conditions

•Availability and affordability of short-term wet slips for the holiday weekend

In addition, boaters are also encouraged to sign up for the free "Miami-Dade Marina SMS Alerts."

The service will help keep boaters up-to-date on such issues as hazardous weather conditions and boat ramp closures and re-openings via text alerts to their email or mobile.
