KEY BISCAYNE (CBSMiami) -- Two people needed rescue after a fire destroyed their boat off the coast of Key Biscayne.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue sent out fireboats at 11:28 a.m. Saturday, June 25th, after receiving a call about a possible explosion on a small vessel four miles east of Key Biscayne.

They arrived to find the boat fully engulfed in flames.

Miami Beach Marine Patrol units were able to pick up the boaters and take them to No Name Harbor, where they were then rushed to the local trauma center suffering from burns to their lower extremities.

"MDFR would like to remind boaters the importance of properly checking your vessels and equipment onboard prior to going out to sail," officials said. "It is very important to always have a fire extinguisher on hand in case of a fire onboard a vessel."

The fire was extinguished.

An investigation into how it started is underway.
