Board member: 100 teens involved in melee at Fort Lauderdale High
FORT LAUDERDALE - It was a scene of total chaos in the courtyard of Fort Lauderdale High School Friday after a series of fights broke out around lunch hour.
Students took cell phone videos showing fists flying and even security wrestling students to the ground.
"It was like the WWE," one student said.
"I call it a mosh pit. Some students were bleeding," said another.
Several students said this was a continuation of fights happening off campus this week.
Adding to the disruption some students could be seen banging on doors after a code red was issued and doors were locked.
We asked School Board Member Allen Zeman whether that dictated a review of safety protocols. He says yes and that the board would be looking at all school safety at a full-day meeting in April.
"Over 100 students were involved in these fights and those caught fighting were suspended and are off campus and gone," said Zeman.
No weapons were found.
Disruptions were also reported at Sunrise Middle and Stranahan High School in Fort Lauderdale. No weapons were found there either
Fort Lauderdale High School has an A+ rating and parents and students say Friday's chaos is unprecedented.
Several parents came to the school when they heard about the disruption to pick up their kids, but they had to wait for regular dismissal because the school was in lockdown.
