Black Maternal Health Week: Doctor explains significance of alarming CDC statistics

MIAMI — Black Maternal Health Week is intentionally held during National Minority Health Month to join dozens of global organizations in marking April 11 as International Day for Maternal Health and Rights. 

Community groups take this day as an opportunity to advocate for the elimination of maternal and infant mortality globally. 

Here's what's happening in South Florida. 

Black Maternal Health Week kicks off Thursday with National Black Doula Day

Friday - Sunday, April 19-21

11 a.m. - 6 p.m.: Magic, Mirth and Mortality: Musings on Black Motherhood. Price $12 per person. Exhibition that explores the resilience of mothers through visual and literary art. Young At Art Museum, 8000 W. Broward Blvd., Plantation, FL 33388. 

Saturday, April 20

9 a.m. - Noon: Black Mamas Matter and the Family Experience. Free community event at the Optimist Club of Overtown at Theodore Gibson Park, 350 NW 12 Street, Miami , FL 33136. Sponsored by the Dade County alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

10 a.m. - 1 p.m.: Minority Maternal Health Fair. Free community health fair aimed at supporting minority women on their motherhood journey, from pre-birth to postpartum. Register here. Location: Lauderdale Lakes Educational and Cultural Center, 3580 W. Oakland Park Blvd., Lauderdale Lakes, FL 33311.
