MIAMI (CBSMiami) - A big change went into effect Monday morning at Dolphin Expressway interchange at NW 27th Avenue.

It's called the Diverging Diamond Interchange or DDI for short. It's a new traffic interchange that has drivers briefly driving on the opposite side of the road as they pass under the State Road 836.

It's supposed to aid with traffic congestion but there are a few things that still need fixing, like the timing of the lights which caused some drivers to be stuck at the intersection leading up to the Dolphin.

"We're working with them, we're tweaking the signal timing to flush the interchange in each direction so that we don't have the people blocking in the intersection," said Miami-Dade Expressway Authority director of engineering Juan Toledo.

On the first day of DDI, police officers were at the interchange to help drivers get used to the new traffic pattern. The lanes are clearly marked and most drivers didn't have a problem navigating the change.

"It's a new pattern so people are going to start getting used to it, but again, so far people are staying in their lanes, they are following the arrows, it seems it seems like everyone is going through there with caution which is what we wanted them to do," said Toledo.

DDIs may be new to South Florida, but they achieved positive results in places like Atlanta's metro area.

A DDI at Northwest 57th Avenue is expected to open by the end of the year.
