Bieber Has Valentine's Day Date With South Florida Judge

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — Pop singer turned sometimes bad boy Justin Bieber has a Valentine's Day date with a South Florida judge.

Tuesday, a Miami-Dade County judge set a Feb. 14th arraignment date for the 19-year-old super star on charges of DUI, resisting arrest and driving with an expired license.

In an arraignment, prosecutors formally file charges and a plea is entered, although a defendant's lawyer can enter the plea in writing. Bieber might not be required to attend.

Bieber and R&B singer Khalil Amir Sharieff were arrested Thursday, January 23rd in Miami Beach during what police described as an illegal street drag race between a Lamborghini and a Ferrari. Bieber was in the yellow Lamborghini and Khalil was in the red Ferrari.

CBS4 reporter Maggie Newland was first to show the world the surveillance video that captured Bieber's alleged race with Khalil down Pine Tree Drive on Miami Beach. Police said he was speeding between 55-60 miles per hour on the tree-lined road where the posted speed limit is 30 mph.

Neither has been charged with drag racing.

Police said Bieber admitted to smoking marijuana, drinking and taking a prescription medication.

As a result of the charges, Bieber could automatically lose his license for a year and he could face a fine up to $1000 and 50 hours of community service. The ramifications for his career are less clear. There have been plenty of music stars who have been entwined in far more serious legal trouble or scandal, and have rebounded thanks to the power of a hit single and/or an image makeover.
