Attempted Smash & Grab At T-Mobile Store In Davie

FT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – Davie police are investigating an attempted smash and grab burglary at a cell phone store.

In the overnight hours, someone used a stolen truck to smash in the glass front of a T-Mobile store in a shopping plaza on University Drive just south of Griffin Road.

Once inside, he took a cell phone. Investigators say something spooked him and he dropped the phone as he ran off.

Police recovered the stolen truck.  They've have also reviewed the store's surveillance video in an effort to identify the would-be burglar.

Davie police this was not the first the first smash and grab burglary at this store - it was hit three weeks ago.

Davie police believe this could be the work of an organized ring.

Over the last six months there have been over a dozen cell phone store smash and grabs in Broward and Dade counties.

"They are selling these phones. Its clear profit and tax free," said Captain Dale Engle of the Davie Police Department.

Engle says police agencies are comparing notes on these brazen crimes. The latest burglary has patrons uneasy.

It happened in a busy plaza. "Davie is a nice town. We would like to keep it that way," said Rose Banks.
