Army Fugitive On The Run For Three Decades Appears In Court
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – One of the U.S. Army's most wanted men appeared in court Friday morning just a day after being captured by U.S. Marshals.
James Jones is being held without bond after being arrested Thursday.
The convicted killer had been on the run since escaping from a federal prison in 1974.
Marshals said Jones lived an apparently quiet life in South Florida for more than three decades after escaping prison at Leavenworth following his conviction for murdering a fellow Army private.
Investigators say Jones lived most recently in Deerfield Beach using the name of one of his old friends, Bruce Walter Keith.Facial recognition technology helped the Marshals find identify Jones.
Officials said Jones admitted his true identity when he was arrested at his workplace in Pompano Beach.
Neighbors knew Jones as Bruce Keith, the friendly man with the well maintained home, boat and nice cars in the driveway of his Deerfield Beach house.
The Marshals say the U.S. Army will eventually take custody of him.
