An 11-year-old girl has died after being shot at an apartment building in Miami

MIAMI – Police say the call came in at noon on Tuesday. An 11-year-old child had been shot at an apartment building at the corner of NW 17th Street and 2nd Avenue in Miami's historic Overtown neighborhood, near downtown.

Family members of the child rushed her into care at Holtz Children's Hospital where she remained in critical condition for much of the day.

According to a senior law enforcement source, the child has died.

Police say they believe her father is a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. So investigators are trying to find out why a gun was in the house at all.

A lot of people were inside the home at the time of the shooting, according to police. A number of people were taken into custody for questioning, at the scene and at the hospital, as part of the shooting investigating.

They have been separated and are being interviewed at the police station by officers now.

Miami Police Chief Manuel Morales would not confirm who was responsible when he arrived on the scene. "We're fairly confident that whoever was involved in this incident — whatever that might be, whatever those details to be revealed later — are in our custody at this time."

Police say they were initially told by family that this incident was a drive-by shooting. But investigators say the shooting likely was an accident that took place inside the home.

Now, officials are trying to figure out who's actually responsible, and are not ruling the possibility that the child may have accidentally shot herself.

City of Miami police say this was an isolated incident and that there is no risk to the general public.

"There's no individuals that are outside of the individuals that we have, that are wanted for this very serious, very tragic incident at this time," said Morales.
