MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- It's an all out war between grocery stores in south Florida. They are cutting prices to get you inside their stores.
Winn-Dixie is making a big push with their "Down-Down" program.
Bill Nasshan, Winn Dixie spokesperson says, "We decided to take hundreds of items and lower their prices 'down-down' and hold that so people don't have the stress of figuring out where the best deal is."
They've cut prices on more than 400 staple items, keeping them down for at least 6 months.
CBS4's Ted Scouten did a little price comparison with a few staple items to see who has the best deals.
He compared prices at Wal-Mart, Winn-Dixie and Publix. When the totals came in we found Wal-Mart was the cheapest at $20.37 followed by Winn-Dixie at $24.07 and Publix at $26.56.
Wal-Mart spokesperson Evie Chitty says, "We always, every day, offer low prices. So we have an everyday low pricing model which comes from our everyday low cost operating model in our stores at Wal-mart."
Wal-Mart keeps a close eye on competitors. If someone advertises something lower, they'll match it.
"Our store managers have autonomy to check their competitors in their local area and at the store level. They have the autonomy to lower their prices to make sure we are, in fact, the price leader," Chitty continues.
Publix keeps an eye on the competition, too, posting a sign near the front door pointing out items that Publix sells cheaper than Wal-Mart. And they have their "BOGOs" or Buy-One-Get-One free items. Winn-Dixie has those too.
Publix spokesperson Nicole Krauss says, "Every week, upwards of 40 items on BOGO and then on holiday weeks when you need even more to celebrate with your family and friends, 60 items at minimum can be found at BOGO at Publix."
Publix and Winn Dixie also offer on-line coupons. Publix calls their coupon policy very friendly.
Krauss says, "You can have a competitor coupon, manufacturer coupon and a Publix coupon to maximize savings and with a BOGO, you save a lot of money."
Stores say the best way to save is to check out their sales ahead of time. Look for those special deals like buy-one-get-one. When you plan your grocery trip ahead of time you're more likely to find the best place for the best deals.
One more way to make sure you maximize your savings is to download the app for all the stores to see if there are any special coupons on line to help you save money.
