Alex Rodriguez Takes First Swings Of Spring At Yankees Camp

TAMPA (CBSMiami) – Alex Rodriguez took his first at bats in Yankees pinstripes since 2013 on Monday afternoon.
The 39-year-old took part in the Yankees intrasquad scrimmage as their designated hitter, going 0-for-2 at the plate.
Hitting off a pitching machine, Rodriguez grounded out to third base on his first attempt and then hit a fly ball to shallow right field during his next at-bat. He saw a total of three pitches.
New York will play their exhibition season opener on Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies in Clearwater, but Rodriguez will not be in the lineup.
A-Rod missed the entire 2014 season after being suspended from baseball for a year following violations of MLB's drug policy.
He could make his Spring Training debut on Wednesday when the Yankees host the Phillies in Tampa.
New York manager Joe Girardi has said that Chase Headley will be the Yankees starting third baseman and that Rodriguez will compete for a spot as the team's designated hitter.
