MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Its business as usual for travelers Tuesday at Miami International Airport—but a look behind the scenes paints a different picture.

In the wake of last week's terrorist attack in Paris, security at airports has been heightened.

Ted Cadet, traveling to Atlanta from Miami International Airport, told CBS4 that it's, "better to be safe than sorry. Lives are at stake—I think they should really beef it up for people's safety."

The Department of Homeland Security said they have stepped up safety measures at airports and federal buildings across the country.

Tom Zatko, who is traveling to Hartford Tuesday, thinks a security boost is a "great idea."

"…they have some credible threats or they wouldn't be doing this so I don't think we're overreacting. If it's a little bit of a hassle so be it. That's just the way life is at the moment," Zatko said.

Federal authorities said there's no specific intelligence of attack, but as a precaution, security screeners are increasing the number of random passenger and carry-on bag searches.

Richard Iachac, traveling to Brazil, approves of the proactive measures put into place.

"I think it's important to check as much information as possible about the travelers and the bags. We don't know when you could have a potential problem," Iachac said.

In order to keep sensitive security information out of the wrong hands, South Florida airport officials won't comment on the steps they're taking to comply with federal regulations.

Lisa and Tom Zatko said despite the need for increased vigilance, they feel safe traveling and welcome the extra checks.

"I'm confident as long as they do what they're supposed to do checking bags, they can open my bags, look in my luggage and I want them to do the same for everybody else," Lisa Zatko said.

The Department of Homeland Security has also asked TSA to review whether more security measures are needed at airports in the US and overseas.
